
Job Summary
The Steel Manager is responsible for overseeing daily steel fabrication and installation activities for ship new building projects, ensuring smooth operations and timely project delivery. This role provides critical support in managing day-to-day steel production activities, optimizing manpower and material resources, and ensuring full compliance with safety, quality, and production standards. The Steel Manager plays a vital role in maintaining workflow efficiency, coordinating cross-functional teams, and achieving project milestones without compromising quality or safety.
Key Responsibilities
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
• Support steelworks HOD/ Production manager for overall management and execution of shipbuilding projects from inception to delivery
• Assist the Steelworks HOD in planning, organizing, and controlling steel fabrication, assembly operations in the shipyard.
• Supervise steel workers, welders, fabricators, DC & QC and other technical & Supervisory staff to ensure productivity and quality standards are met.
• Participate in problem-solving and technical troubleshooting during various construction phases.
• Monitor daily production activities, schedules, and workflows to achieve project deadlines.
• Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and quality control departments to align production with design specifications and material availability.
• In absence of steelworks Head, monitor/support the repair, conversion projects also, in additional to his primary role of NB manager.
• All the workshop’s activities to be planned and controlled directly by him.
• Assist in preparing progress reports, risk assessments, and project documentation for management and clients.
• Assist in budgeting, cost control, and inventory management of steel materials and tools.
• Conduct inspections and quality checks to maintain product standards.
• Facilitate training, development, and performance evaluation of the steelworks team.
• Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
• Report regularly to the Steelworks Manager on production status, issues, and achievements.
Key Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Naval Architecture / Ship Construction, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry.
• Fluent in English (spoken and written) for effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
• Prior experience as a Steel Fabrication Manager in a reputable shipyard.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, ship plans, and construction specifications.
• Strong knowledge of steel fabrication processes, welding techniques, and quality standards.
• Proficient in production planning and resource management.
• Strong understanding of international shipbuilding standards, including IACS classification society standards (NK, LR, DNV, ABS, BV, etc.) and AWS D1.1.
• Familiar with safety and environmental regulations applicable to shipyard operations.
• Malay or Bahasa Indonesia language proficiency is an advantage.
• Solid understanding of shipbuilding processes, including material identification, steel plate and profile cutting, sub-assembly, panel line operations, block assembly, erection, and outfitting.
• Knowledge of inspection and testing techniques, including NDT, pressure testing, alignment checks, and dimensional control.
• Proficient in MS Office, AutoCAD, and Navisworks software.
• Strong leadership capability in managing multi-disciplinary and multi-national teams.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with Production, Planning, HSE, and Project Management departments.
• Strong understanding of shipbuilding processes, project management, and construction techniques.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
• Able to enforce quality and HSE-related decisions in a decisive yet fair manner.
• Capable of performing effectively under tight project schedules and high-pressure environments.
• Demonstrates a high level of integrity and strong commitment to quality and safety standards.
